Hematocrit Safety Levels

Meaning

Hematocrit safety levels represent the clinically established upper limits for the volume percentage of red blood cells in the peripheral blood, a critical measure in patient monitoring. Maintaining hematocrit within a physiological range is essential, as excessively high levels, known as polycythemia or erythrocytosis, increase blood viscosity and significantly elevate the risk of thromboembolic events, such as stroke or deep vein thrombosis. These levels are particularly monitored in patients receiving exogenous androgen therapy due to the hormone’s stimulatory effect on erythropoiesis.
