Hematocrit Monitoring

Meaning

Hematocrit monitoring is a clinical procedure that involves periodically measuring the hematocrit, which is the percentage of red blood cells (erythrocytes) by volume in the total blood sample. This test is a standard component of a complete blood count and is particularly critical in men undergoing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), as supraphysiological androgen levels can stimulate erythropoiesis, potentially leading to erythrocytosis. Sustained, excessive elevation of hematocrit can increase blood viscosity and raise the risk of thromboembolic events.
