Hematocrit Elevation

Meaning

Hematocrit elevation refers to an increase in the proportion of red blood cells (erythrocytes) relative to the total blood volume, often measured as a percentage. While a moderate increase can reflect improved oxygen-carrying capacity, an excessive elevation leads to a condition known as polycythemia, which significantly increases blood viscosity. This hyperviscosity raises the clinical risk for thromboembolic events, including stroke and deep vein thrombosis. In the context of hormonal health, this elevation is a recognized, dose-dependent side effect of exogenous androgen therapy, such as testosterone replacement.
