Heart Muscle Cells

Meaning

Heart Muscle Cells, scientifically termed cardiomyocytes, are the specialized, striated, involuntary muscle cells that constitute the bulk of the myocardium, the muscular layer of the heart wall. These cells are uniquely characterized by their branched structure, central nucleus, and high density of mitochondria, reflecting their continuous, high-energy demand for rhythmic contraction. Their collective, coordinated electrical and mechanical activity is what drives the cardiac cycle and maintains systemic blood flow.
