Healthy User Effect

Meaning

The Healthy User Effect describes a specific form of selection bias encountered in observational studies, where individuals who choose to engage in health-promoting behaviors or adhere to a particular intervention are inherently healthier or possess distinct characteristics compared to those who do not. This pre-existing health status or set of behaviors, rather than the intervention itself, can appear to drive positive outcomes, thereby confounding the true effect of the intervention under investigation.
