HDL Cholesterol

Meaning

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, often referred to as HDL-C, represents a class of lipoproteins responsible for transporting cholesterol from peripheral tissues back to the liver. This process, known as reverse cholesterol transport, is critical for maintaining cellular cholesterol homeostasis and is widely recognized for its protective role against atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, leading to its designation as “good” cholesterol.
