HCG

Meaning

HCG is the acronym for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a glycoprotein hormone structurally similar to Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which is principally produced by the syncytiotrophoblast cells of the placenta during pregnancy. In a clinical context outside of gestation, exogenous HCG is utilized for its potent LH-mimicking activity. It serves as a vital clinical tool for stimulating gonadal function in both males and females. The presence of HCG in the circulation is a definitive biochemical marker of pregnancy.
