HCG

Meaning

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone primarily produced by the syncytiotrophoblast of the placenta during pregnancy, though small amounts can be produced by pituitary tumors. Clinically, it is essential for maintaining the corpus luteum’s progesterone production in early gestation. Measurement of serum or urine HCG is the standard diagnostic test for pregnancy.
