Hair Miniaturization

Meaning

The progressive reduction in the diameter, length, and pigmentation of the hair shaft, a key pathological hallmark of androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness. This process transforms thick, mature terminal hairs into fine, short, barely visible vellus hairs due to the adverse influence of specific androgens on susceptible hair follicles. The clinical significance of miniaturization is its direct correlation with the visual manifestation of hair thinning and hair loss.
