Hair Follicle Sensitivity

Meaning

Hair follicle sensitivity refers to the differential responsiveness of hair follicles, which are miniature hormone-responsive organs, to circulating levels of androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This sensitivity is genetically determined and varies significantly across different body regions and between individuals. High sensitivity in scalp follicles can lead to miniaturization and androgenetic alopecia, while high sensitivity in other areas can contribute to hirsutism.
