Hair Follicle Circadian Clock

Meaning

The Hair Follicle Circadian Clock is an intrinsic, self-sustaining molecular timekeeping system located within the epithelial and dermal components of the hair follicle, operating independently of the central suprachiasmatic nucleus clock. This peripheral clock regulates the rhythmic, approximately 24-hour expression of numerous genes and proteins that control key phases of the hair growth cycle, including anagen (growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (rest). Its proper function is essential for healthy hair cycling, and disruption is implicated in various forms of alopecia and hair aging.
