Gut Permeability Metrics

Meaning

Objective, measurable indices used in clinical practice to assess the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, often referred to as the “tight junctions.” These metrics quantify the passage of non-metabolized molecules from the gut lumen into the systemic circulation, a phenomenon known as increased gut permeability or “leaky gut.” Clinically relevant markers include zonulin, lactulose-to-mannitol ratios, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels.
