Gut Circadian Rhythm

Meaning

The gut circadian rhythm is the endogenous, approximately 24-hour oscillation in physiological processes occurring within the gastrointestinal tract, governed by a local set of “clock genes” in the gut tissues. This rhythm dictates the timing of key functions, including intestinal motility, nutrient absorption, barrier permeability, and the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota. Maintaining synchronization between this internal gut clock and the central suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) clock is vital for optimal digestive and metabolic health.
