Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue

Meaning

Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT) is a crucial, organized collection of immune cells and lymphoid structures strategically located within the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract. GALT constitutes the largest mass of lymphoid tissue in the body, encompassing specialized sites such as Peyer’s patches and solitary lymphoid follicles. It functions as the body’s primary immunological surveillance system for the digestive system, mediating immune tolerance and defense against ingested pathogens.
