Growth Hormone-Insulin Axis

Meaning

The Growth Hormone-Insulin Axis describes the intricate, reciprocal regulatory relationship between Growth Hormone (GH) secreted by the pituitary gland and Insulin secreted by the pancreatic beta cells. This axis is central to energy metabolism, growth, and body composition throughout the lifespan. GH generally acts as an insulin antagonist in peripheral tissues, raising blood glucose, while Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), which is stimulated by GH, mediates most of GH’s growth-promoting effects.
