Growth Hormone Axis Attenuation

Meaning

Growth Hormone Axis Attenuation refers to the progressive, age-related decline in the pulsatile secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) and the subsequent reduction in circulating Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) levels. This natural process, often termed somatopause, represents a dampening of the entire somatotropic axis, the system responsible for tissue repair, metabolism, and body composition maintenance. Clinically, this attenuation contributes to sarcopenia, increased visceral adiposity, and diminished vitality associated with aging. The reduced amplitude and frequency of GH pulses are the physiological hallmarks of this change.
