GRAS Status

Meaning

GRAS Status, an acronym for “Generally Recognized As Safe,” is a regulatory designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicating that a chemical or substance added to food is considered safe by qualified experts under its intended conditions of use. This status applies to substances that have been adequately shown to be safe through scientific procedures or, in the case of substances used prior to 1958, through common use in food.
