GRAS Loophole

Meaning

A colloquial term used to describe a provision in United States food law that permits a substance to be added to food without formal pre-market review and approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) if the substance is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by qualified experts. The “loophole” aspect refers to the process allowing a manufacturer to make a self-determination of GRAS status without informing the FDA, bypassing the full regulatory scrutiny required for a food additive.
