Granulosa Cells

Meaning

Granulosa cells are specialized somatic cells located within the ovarian follicle, which surround and support the developing oocyte. These cells are essential for folliculogenesis and play a pivotal role in the cyclic production of sex steroid hormones, particularly estradiol. Their health and proliferation are directly dependent on gonadotropin signaling, making them a critical component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in female reproductive physiology.
