Granulosa Cell Apoptosis

Meaning

The process of programmed cell death, or apoptosis, specifically occurring in the granulosa cells of the ovarian follicle. This physiological event is a critical regulator of ovarian function, responsible for the selection of the dominant follicle and the elimination of the vast majority of subordinate follicles in a process known as atresia. Dysregulation of this precise mechanism can lead to conditions like premature ovarian insufficiency or polycystic ovary syndrome.
