GPCR Agonist

Meaning

A GPCR Agonist is a signaling molecule, which may be an endogenous hormone, a neurotransmitter, or a pharmaceutical compound, that specifically binds to and successfully activates a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) situated on the cell surface. This binding event initiates a precise cascade of intracellular signaling, effectively mimicking or enhancing the biological action of the body’s natural ligand. GPCRs constitute the largest and most diverse family of membrane receptors, playing central, pervasive roles in virtually all physiological functions, including the intricate regulation of the entire endocrine system by peptide hormones.
