Gonadotropin Secretion

Meaning

Gonadotropin secretion refers to the pulsatile release of two key glycoprotein hormones, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), from the anterior pituitary gland. These hormones are central regulators of reproductive function in both males and females, controlling gonadal steroidogenesis and gamete maturation. The precise pattern and amplitude of this secretion are tightly controlled by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, forming the critical hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This finely tuned secretory rhythm is essential for fertility and maintaining sex steroid homeostasis.
