Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone Suppression

Meaning

A clinical strategy involving the pharmacological reduction or cessation of the pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. This action, in turn, suppresses the downstream secretion of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. The ultimate physiological effect is a profound decrease in the production of sex steroids, such as testosterone and estrogen, by the gonads. This suppression is a reversible chemical castration used therapeutically for specific hormone-sensitive conditions.
