Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonists

Meaning

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonists are synthetic compounds designed to mimic the natural hypothalamic hormone, GnRH. These pharmaceutical agents initially stimulate, then paradoxically desensitize, the pituitary gland’s GnRH receptors, leading to a sustained suppression of gonadotropin secretion. This controlled downregulation ultimately reduces the production of sex steroids like estrogen and testosterone from the gonads.
