Gonadotropin Pulsatility Disruption

Meaning

Gonadotropin Pulsatility Disruption describes an irregularity or cessation in the normal, rhythmic, intermittent release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which consequently impairs the pulsatile secretion of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) from the pituitary. This finely tuned pulsatile pattern is essential for stimulating the gonads to produce sex steroids and mature gametes. When this pulsatility is disrupted, often due to metabolic stress or energy deficits, it leads directly to reproductive dysfunction, manifesting as hypogonadism or amenorrhea. Restoring this neuroendocrine rhythm is a central goal in treating fertility and hormonal deficiencies.
