Gonadotropin Mimicry

Meaning

Gonadotropin mimicry refers to the action of substances, whether endogenous or exogenous, that structurally or functionally resemble natural gonadotropins like Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), thereby activating their respective receptors and eliciting similar physiological responses within the gonads. This phenomenon involves compounds that can bind to and stimulate the G-protein coupled receptors typically targeted by these pituitary hormones, influencing steroidogenesis and gamete maturation. The resulting cellular signaling pathways mirror those initiated by the body’s own regulatory hormones, leading to downstream effects on reproductive function.
