Gonadotroph

Meaning

A Gonadotroph is a specialized basophilic cell type located in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, serving as a pivotal component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. These cells are functionally dedicated to the synthesis and pulsatile secretion of the two primary gonadotropins: Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Gonadotrophs are essential for regulating reproductive function, coordinating gamete maturation, and stimulating the synthesis of sex steroid hormones in the testes and ovaries.
