Gonadotrope Desensitization

Meaning

Gonadotrope desensitization describes a physiological process where pituitary gonadotropes, specialized anterior pituitary cells, exhibit reduced responsiveness to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) after prolonged exposure. This diminished sensitivity substantially decreases luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion, key hormones regulating reproduction.
