Gonadotoxicity

Meaning

Gonadotoxicity describes the capacity of an external agent, such as chemotherapy, radiation, or environmental toxins, to inflict structural or functional damage upon the gonads, specifically the ovaries and testes. This adverse effect directly compromises the dual functions of the gonads: steroid hormone production and gamete generation. Clinical concern centers on the potential for permanent hypogonadism and irreversible infertility.
