Gonadal Senescence

Meaning

Gonadal senescence describes the inevitable, age-related decline and progressive functional failure of the gonads, encompassing both the ovaries in females and the testes in males. This biological process is characterized by a significant reduction in the synthesis of sex steroid hormones and a diminished capacity for gamete production. It forms the core endocrine basis for menopause in women and the gradual, complex decline in androgen levels observed in aging men.
