Gonadal Quiescence

Meaning

A temporary or prolonged state of hormonal inactivity in the gonads—the ovaries in females and the testes in males—characterized by minimal production of sex steroid hormones and minimal gamete maturation. This physiological state is most prominently observed during childhood, prior to the onset of puberty, where the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is functionally suppressed. Clinically, it represents a period of endocrine rest, distinct from pathological gonadal failure.
