Gonadal Inertia

Meaning

Gonadal inertia describes a clinical state where the gonads, either testes or ovaries, exhibit a diminished or absent response to appropriate stimulation by the pituitary gonadotropins, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This condition represents a primary failure at the gonadal level, despite adequate upstream signaling from the hypothalamus and pituitary. It is a critical factor in diagnosing primary hypogonadism, distinguishing it from central causes.
