Gonadal Hormones

Meaning

Gonadal hormones are steroid compounds primarily synthesized and secreted by the gonads: the testes in males and the ovaries in females. These critical chemical messengers include androgens, such as testosterone, and estrogens, like estradiol, along with progestogens, such as progesterone. They play a central role in the development of primary and secondary sexual characteristics, as well as the regulation of reproductive functions across the lifespan. Their presence is fundamental for sexual differentiation and the maintenance of reproductive health.
