Gonadal Axis Inhibition

Meaning

Gonadal axis inhibition refers to the suppression of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, the primary neuroendocrine pathway regulating reproductive function and sex steroid production. This inhibition can be a physiological response, such as negative feedback from high circulating sex hormone levels, or a pharmacological effect induced by exogenous agents. Clinically, intentional inhibition is used in therapies for hormone-sensitive conditions like prostate cancer or precocious puberty, or as a side effect of certain medications. The consequence is a significant reduction in the endogenous production of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, which can impact fertility and bone mineral density.
