Gonadal Atrophy

Meaning

Gonadal atrophy is the clinical condition characterized by the pathological reduction in size and functional capacity of the gonads, specifically the testes in males or the ovaries in females. This decline results in diminished production of sex steroids, such as testosterone and estrogen, and often impaired gamete production. Atrophy can be a consequence of aging, systemic illness, certain medications, or disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, leading to hypogonadism. Clinical management focuses on identifying the root cause and, frequently, on hormone replacement therapy to mitigate the symptoms of hormone deficiency.
