Goitrogens

Meaning

Goitrogens are a diverse group of naturally occurring or synthetic substances that actively interfere with the normal physiological function of the thyroid gland, primarily by disrupting the uptake of iodide or the essential synthesis of thyroid hormones. Chronic, excessive exposure to these agents can lead to clinical hypothyroidism and the subsequent compensatory enlargement of the thyroid gland, a condition medically termed a goiter. In the context of hormonal health, understanding and mitigating dietary and environmental goitrogen exposure is particularly important for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions or marginal iodine intake.
