GnRH Receptor Desensitization

Meaning

GnRH Receptor Desensitization is a key pharmacological phenomenon where the continuous, non-pulsatile exposure of the pituitary gland to a Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) agonist leads to a profound reduction in receptor responsiveness. This initial stimulatory phase is rapidly followed by a functional downregulation of the receptors, which ultimately suppresses the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This therapeutic effect is clinically leveraged to achieve a state of reversible hypogonadism, treating hormone-sensitive conditions such as precocious puberty, endometriosis, or prostate cancer.
