GnRH Neuron Migration

Meaning

GnRH Neuron Migration is the essential, genetically-programmed developmental process where Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) producing neurons originate outside the embryonic brain, specifically in the nasal placode, and then follow a precise path along olfactory nerve fibers to establish their final, critical location in the hypothalamus. This journey is absolutely paramount for the correct formation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, the master regulator of all reproductive function. A congenital failure of this migration results in Kallmann syndrome, characterized by the absence of puberty.
