GnRH Desensitization

Meaning

GnRH Desensitization is a clinical phenomenon and therapeutic strategy where the continuous, non-pulsatile administration of a Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) agonist leads to a profound reduction in the responsiveness of the pituitary gonadotroph cells. This persistent receptor stimulation paradoxically results in the downregulation of GnRH receptors, effectively inhibiting the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). The ultimate physiological outcome is a state of controlled, reversible hypogonadism.
