GnRH Analogs

Meaning

GnRH analogs are synthetic pharmaceutical compounds designed to mimic the action of the naturally occurring hypothalamic hormone, Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone, which is a decapeptide that controls the release of pituitary gonadotropins, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). These analogs are clinically categorized as either agonists, which initially stimulate and then suppress the pituitary, or antagonists, which immediately block the pituitary receptors. They are utilized extensively in reproductive medicine for controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and in oncology to suppress sex hormone production for hormone-sensitive cancers.
