GnRH Agonist Therapy

Meaning

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonist Therapy involves the clinical administration of synthetic compounds that mimic the action of the naturally occurring GnRH peptide, initially causing a temporary surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), followed by a sustained downregulation of the pituitary gland. This paradoxical, long-term inhibitory effect ultimately suppresses the production of sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen from the gonads. This therapy is clinically used to treat hormone-sensitive conditions such as prostate cancer, endometriosis, and precocious puberty.
