Glycolysis

Meaning

The fundamental metabolic pathway that occurs in the cytoplasm of virtually all cells, involving the sequential breakdown of a six-carbon glucose molecule into two three-carbon pyruvate molecules. This process is a crucial initial step in cellular respiration, generating a small net amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) for immediate energy use. Hormones such as insulin and glucagon act as key regulators, tightly controlling the rate of glycolysis to maintain glucose homeostasis and meet the body’s energy demands.
