Gluteofemoral Fat Reserves

Meaning

The subcutaneous adipose tissue depots located specifically in the buttocks, hips, and thighs, which are metabolically and hormonally distinct from abdominal fat. These reserves are characterized by a higher density of anti-lipolytic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and are often associated with a lower cardiometabolic risk profile, particularly in pre-menopausal women. Their primary physiological role is long-term energy storage and, in women, provision of lipids for gestation and lactation.
