Glutathione Synthesis

Meaning

Glutathione synthesis is the fundamental biological process by which the tripeptide molecule glutathione is manufactured within cells from its three constituent amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine. This molecule is the body’s master endogenous antioxidant, playing a critical role in detoxifying harmful compounds, neutralizing reactive oxygen species, and maintaining cellular redox balance. Optimal synthesis is vital for protecting the delicate machinery of endocrine glands and liver cells, which are constantly engaged in hormone metabolism and detoxification. Impaired synthesis can lead to increased oxidative stress, accelerating cellular aging and dysfunction.
