Glutathione S-Transferases

Meaning

Glutathione S-Transferases (GSTs) are a large, diverse superfamily of enzymes that are critical components of the Phase II detoxification system, found in high concentrations within the liver and other metabolically active tissues. Their primary physiological function is to catalyze the conjugation of the tripeptide glutathione to various electrophilic and often toxic compounds, including both endogenous metabolites and foreign substances. This reaction is vital for rendering harmful substances inert and water-soluble for subsequent excretion.
