Glutathione Conjugation

Meaning

Glutathione conjugation is a crucial phase II biotransformation reaction predominantly catalyzed by the Glutathione S-transferase (GST) family of enzymes, primarily in the hepatic tissue. This process involves the covalent attachment of the tripeptide glutathione (GSH) to electrophilic, often toxic, compounds. The enzymatic reaction transforms these lipophilic substances into highly water-soluble glutathione conjugates.
