Glutathione Conjugation

Meaning

Glutathione conjugation is a critical phase II biotransformation pathway primarily in the liver, involving the enzymatic attachment of the tripeptide glutathione to electrophilic compounds, xenobiotics, and endogenous toxins. This process increases their water solubility, facilitating their subsequent elimination from the body. It is mainly catalyzed by glutathione S-transferases, forming a mercapturic acid precursor.
