Glutamate Excitotoxicity

Meaning

Glutamate excitotoxicity is a pathological process where excessive activation of glutamate receptors causes neuronal damage and death. Glutamate, the central nervous system’s primary excitatory neurotransmitter, becomes neurotoxic when its synaptic concentration rises unchecked. This overstimulation overwhelms homeostatic mechanisms, compromising neuronal viability.
