GLUT4 Transporters

Meaning

GLUT4 transporters, or Glucose Transporter Type 4, are specialized carrier proteins predominantly found in the cell membranes of insulin-responsive tissues, namely skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Their primary function is to facilitate the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into these cells, a critical step in maintaining glucose homeostasis. The presence of GLUT4 on the cell surface is directly regulated by insulin signaling and muscle contraction, making them key components in the pathogenesis and management of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Optimal function of these transporters is essential for metabolic health.
