Mechanism
In the basal state, GLUT4 resides in intracellular vesicles within the muscle and fat cells. This cascade triggers the translocation of the GLUT4-containing vesicles to the plasma membrane, where they fuse and insert the transporters into the cell surface. Once positioned, GLUT4 rapidly facilitates the passive diffusion of glucose down its concentration gradient into the cell, effectively clearing glucose from the circulation and completing the mechanism of insulin action.
