Glucuronosyltransferases

Meaning

Glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are a critical superfamily of microsomal enzymes, predominantly localized in the liver and kidneys, responsible for catalyzing the glucuronidation reaction. This Phase II metabolic process is essential for the detoxification and clearance of a vast array of lipophilic endogenous compounds, including steroid hormones, thyroid hormones, and bilirubin, as well as many exogenous drugs. Their function is paramount for maintaining metabolic homeostasis.
