Glucuronidation Pathway

Meaning

The Glucuronidation Pathway is a major Phase II detoxification reaction within the liver and other tissues, serving to conjugate various lipophilic endogenous and exogenous compounds with glucuronic acid. This critical biochemical process transforms fat-soluble substances, including steroid hormones, bilirubin, and certain drugs, into more polar, water-soluble glucuronides. The resulting water-soluble metabolites are readily excreted from the body via the bile or urine, facilitating detoxification and hormone clearance.
